Writing Learning Problems- What We Do

Master Writing

Utah high school teachers complain that students entering high school from junior high can’t communicate by writing. College professors complain that college students i.e., high school graduates, can’t write. Employers complain that college graduates joining their workforce can’t write. At every level there is shock that students can’t write to a proficient level.

They all have a right to complain. Far too many Utah students cannot write simple sentences, paragraphs or essays to their expected grade level. The National Center for Education Statistics reports, for the year 2002, 80% of Utah 4th graders were not at a proficient level of writing. The number was 77% at the 8th grade. Lack of writing skills affects grades in all subjects and pulls down national standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT. This major deficiency scuttles all hope for scholarships.

Why do students, who have spent so much time in class learning about writing and have been taught by the best efforts of their teachers, still not know how to write and have writing learning problems?

  • Poor processing skills
  • Lack of understanding of the writing process
  • Inadequate language arts skills
  • A fear of writing
