Our children can have shelves full of books, but if they can't read or spell, what good are books? The National Center for Education Statistics reports, for the year 2003, that 67% of Utah 4th graders were less than proficient readers. For 8th graders the number increased to 77%. This is a huge reading/spelling problem that is accelerating.
