Parents who live with an ADD/ADHD child, or spouses who live with an ADD/ADHD partner, know the frustrations of everyday life. ADHD adults or children exhibit four kinds of problems that are tough on families and schools:
- They have difficulty with selective attention. They tune out when they need to stay tuned in. They tune into the wrong things at inappropriate times. Sometimes they stay super tuned into the wrong things.
- They are easily distracted and have difficulty prioritizing things.
- Some are also hyper and are always in motion. Sitting still is difficult. However, some students have the opposite problem for their brains are sleepy and have a difficult time getting up for the task.
- Many are often impulsive. They blurt out, interrupt, don't wait their turn, and cut in line.
There are many families living with this problem. It is estimated that about 5% of the children in this country are on anti-ADHD medications. That adds up to a great number of frustrations.
Parents often assume that medications solve these many frustrations. While there are parents who find some relief, most find ADHD symptoms persist. How can a student be on meds yet still have symptoms of ADHD? The reason is simple: the medical profession treats only one part of the total problem. Dr. William Sears, MD, author, and expert on ADHD recommends, "Never use medication alone." He states four reasons:
- Meds are temporary. Go off meds and the problem returns.
- A person must take meds for life.
- Side effects. Many students are adversely affected by ADHD mind altering drugs.
- Other factors can produce the same symptoms as attention deficit disorder. Auditory memory and auditory processing are two factors not influenced by meds but produce attention deficit symptoms.
For these reasons, parents often reject the medication approach and look for an alternate treatment that works, such as ADHD schools.
